It’s something that is talked about a lot in everyday life. You hear it at school, at home, on TV; but said in different ways:
- Bounce back.
- Recover from a setback.
- Don’t give up.
- Learn from mistakes and try again.
However, it is said, it means the same thing. When you suffer difficulty in life, how quickly do you recover from the situation and try again?
The quicker you recover, the higher your resilience.
Resilience, like all skills, takes practise – and it is important that you take the time to develop this skill as it is a key consideration for employers who want to know that you can take feedback on board, learn, reflect and come back with a better solution.
Don’t expect to reach your goals straight away. Goals take time. Be patient. You will get there.
If you think your resiliency is low – try some of these tips:
- Get into the habit of seeing the positives. Instead of thinking of the worse-case scenario, think of the best (this can take a lot of practise).
- Start to keep a list of your wins.
- Try something different and new.
- Don’t give up. Try again. And keep trying.
- If it all seems overwhelming, break the problem down into smaller pieces and tackle each one at a time.
- Only think about what you can control. There is nothing to be gained (except more worry) by taking on challenges that you can do nothing about (this one also takes practise).
Remember, secondary school is a time for new opportunities. You may not always succeed – and that’s okay. It’s proof that you tried.
Think about some of the most successful people in the world right now – not all of them succeeded first time. Change is a part of life.
